188,000 objects. What does this really mean? Quite simply, it means that Tullie House can open your eyes to the heritage and art of the region as no-where else can. Of course, you’d go round the bend trying to see them all but even a few will leave you feeling better in touch with just part of the last few millennia. Oh, and by the way, over 100,000 of the objects are actually insect specimens in the Zoology section, so things are looking up already.

The Archaeology section is impressive with key finds ranging across Cumbrian Pre-History, Roman Cumbria, the Dark Ages and Medieval Cumbria. The Roman collection comes not just from Carlisle but from across the Wall and its sphere of influence. There’s a monumental number of inscribed and sculptured stones and a fine range of everything that one would expect in urban living even now. Back then people needed much the same stuff as we have: pottery;  domestic items such as studs and fasteners; lamps; jewellery (bling was big even then); leather shoes and tents. It’s of this minutiae that a picture of life can be made.

The fascinating Staffordshire Moorlands Pan discovered in 2003 has the names of four Wall forts inscribed round it. It is one of only three in existence, all with different forts etched out. Experts think that it was a souvenir of the Wall. Imagine that; makes you look at your holiday souvenirs in a completely new light, doesn’t it. Other great Roman finds are individual tiles made the Emperor for use on official building; and a tile stamped for the legendary Ninth Legion (the fate of the ‘Spanish’ legion is uncertain - they just seem to have kind-of-disappeared which is pretty odd).

Tullie House regularly holds special exhibitions focussing on aspects of Roman life and showcasing discovered treasures. And if you’re feeling that ‘more is better’ then the museum also has a Wildlife and Zoology collection ; Social History (get to grips with the Jacobite Rising); and Fine and Decorative Arts ranging from watercolours to wedding dresses.
