Frontier Experience 10
Hexham; Hexham Abbey; Hexham Old Gaol; Corbridge; Aydon Castle; Dilston Castle and Chapel; Dilston Physic Garden.
The charming market town of Hexham (parking throughout the town) has a glorious Abbey (featuring some ‘re-used’ Roman stone) with Anglo-Saxon crypt (crypt accessible on request), winding medieval streets and England’s first purpose-built prison (the Old Gaol) which is now a museum on Border warfare (accessible).
There are some great walks round Corbridge village (parking) and Aydon Castle fortified manor house (parking, disabled access to ground floor only) but care needs to be taken over the uneven ground. The ruins of the Jacobite stronghold of Dilston Castle and Chapel (parking, access difficult) are nearby as is Dilston Physic Garden (parking and accessible).
