Frontier Experience 11
Heddon-on-the-Wall; Whittledean Reservoir; George Stephenson’s Birthplace, Wylam; Prudhoe Castle; Cherryburn, Stocksfield.
Just west of Newcastle you can see the best remaining section of the broad Wall in a village setting: Heddon-on-the-Wall (the clue’s in the name) is easy to get to and the Wall is easy to see. Whittledean Reservoir is an important site for wintering wildfowl and also has visible earthworks (parking and accessible by track). George Stephenson’s Birthplace at Wylam is preserved by The National Trust; parking for this tiny cottage is half a mile away and the cottage is accessible (step at entrance). Norman Prudhoe Castle has parking and cobbled access to the ground floor (steep steps further up). Also under the care of The National Trust is Cherryburn, birthplace of celebrated local artist Thomas Bewick.
