Frontier Experience 9

Planetrees Wall; Brunton Turret and Wall; Black Carts Wall; Limestone Corner; Temple of Mithras, Carrawburgh; Chesters Walled Garden; St Oswald’s Church.

Either side of Chesters, there are a number of sections of Wall and some turrets that can be clearly seen from the road: Planetrees, the junction of the broad and narrow Walls; the remains of Brunton and Black Carts Turrets and adjoining Wall; and Limestone Corner, littered with abandoned Roman masonry blocks. There is limited parking at Limestone Corner and Brunton Turret but all are accessible by longer walks, often on the Hadrian’s Wall Path. Parking is available at Carrawburgh and it is a short walk round the site to the remarkable ruins of the Temple of Mithras.

Next to Chesters itself is Chesters Walled Garden (parking and wheelchair access) showcasing a Roman herb garden. Just north of Hexham is St Oswald’s Church (roadside parking at Heavenfield Battlefield and walk to the Church).
