Plane
North East England has two international airports, Newcastle and Durham Tees Valley, providing access from airports across the UK, Europe and worldwide. There are direct connections to Germany, the Netherlands, France, Ireland, Spain, the Balearic Islands, Italy, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, the USA, Norway, Denmark, Belgium and more. The new Emirates route from Newcastle makes getting here from Asia and Australasia even easier. Visit the airport websites for more information. Ferry
Newcastle's Royal Quays international ferry terminal is linked to Newcastle's Central Station by a special bus service. DFDS Seaways operates ferries to the Netherlands (IJmuiden, for Amsterdam).
Rail
Hadrian's Wall Country is only around three-and-a-half hours from London by train. National Express high-speed trains arrive into Newcastle from London, York, Edinburgh and other east coast stations. Virgin Trains operates high-speed services into Carlisle from London, Manchester, Glasgow and the west coast. Cross Country operates high-speed services between Newcastle and Scotland, south west England, Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds.
Inter-Regional Trans-Pennine services provide frequent services to Newcastle from Liverpool, Manchester, West Yorkshire and York. Or, travel from Leeds along the dramatic Settle-Carlisle line through the Yorkshire Dales National Park to Carlisle, and connect to trains along the Tyne Valley line.
Rail connections from Newcastle and Carlisle run directly into Hadrian's Wall Country (see Getting Around). First TransPennine Express services connect Newcastle to Liverpool, Manchester, West Yorkshire and York. Or travel from Leeds along the dramatic Settle-Carlisle Railway to Carlisle, and connect to the Hadrian's Wall Country Line.
Coach
National Express coaches run from all over the UK to Newcastle and Carlisle. By car, there are excellent motorway and trunk road links leading to Hadrian's Wall Country including the M6, M1, A1, A7, A68, A69 and A74.
Road
Access from the western side of the country is along the M6 from the south and A74 (M) from Glasgow to Carlisle. Access from the eastern side of the country is along the A1(M) to Newcastle, with the option of using the A68 which links Edinburgh and Darlington to reach the central part of Hadrian's Wall. The A69 between Newcastle and Carlisle runs parallel to Hadrian's Wall (approximately 2-5 miles south) and is the main strategic access route.
