Each year Hadrian’s Wall Country caters for more than 3.5million overnight visits. In addition to this many millions more come to walk in the landscape, see and touch the Wall and enjoy the precious environment that is entrusted to us to look after.
This equates to billions of footsteps and it is through the work of the Hadrian’s Wall Trust and our partners that this global footprint is managed and doesn’t have a lasting, negative impact on the World Heritage Site.
Hadrian’s Wall National Trail is unique among long-distance footpaths in the UK. Its proximity to the ancient monument and position within the World Heritage Site means that management of the path is very exact and very intense.
This means its upkeep comes at a price, in fact each mile of the National Trail costs £2,800 per year to keep in the condition enjoyed by walkers throughout the season. The management of the Wall itself costs much much more and in 2011 this attention to detail was recognised when it was voted Britain’s Best Walking Route by readers of BBC Countryfile Magazine.
The following gives an idea of the costs for the equipment and raw materials needed to keep the path in such excellent condition from year to year:
Compost - £18 per ton
Woodchip - £12 per ton
Ironmongery fittings – From £10 a piece.
Ritter strips (to aid grass growth) - £46 for 10 metres
Signs and notices – From £12.50
